The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), in partnership with SR 400 Peach State Partners, is moving forward with a $4.6 billion express lanes project along a 16-mile stretch of Ga. 400, from North Springs MARTA Station in Sandy Springs to just north of McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County.
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2025, just ahead of Atlanta’s hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is projected to bring 300,000 visitors to the city.
Project Highlights:
New toll express lanes in both directions
Two express lanes each way from North Springs to McGinnis Ferry Road
Narrows to one express lane per direction north of McGinnis Ferry to south Forsyth
Lanes will run in the highway median, similar to those on I-75 South
Dynamic toll pricing based on real-time traffic conditions
Timeline & Partners:
Construction begins: Summer 2025
Substantial completion: Expected by 2031
Project led by SR 400 Peach State Partners, a consortium including Acciona, ACS Infrastructure, Dragados (Spain), Meridiam (France), and Parsons (Virginia)
Parsons alone has 50+ active GDOT contracts and over 200 employees in Metro Atlanta
Next Steps:
Overnight lane closures begin summer 2025 for prep work
GDOT is actively finalizing designs, permits, and right-of-way acquisitions
Project is part of GDOT’s Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP)
Once complete, the Ga. 400 express lanes aim to reduce congestion, improve travel times, and offer more reliable commuting options for North Fulton and Forsyth County residents.
